NASA’s Artemis II crew splashed down in the Pacific Ocean near San Diego at 00:07 UTC today, completing a ten-day lunar flyby. Commander Reid Wiseman, pilot Victor Glover, mission specialists Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen (Canadian Space Agency) were recovered by USS John P. Murtha.
The flight carried several firsts: Glover is the first person of colour, Koch the first woman, and Hansen the first non-US citizen to travel beyond low Earth orbit. On April 6, the crew set a distance record at 248,655 miles from Earth, surpassing Apollo 13’s 56-year-old mark. Full story p. 4.

The Central Bank of Ireland announced on 8 April that it is removing the loan-to-income limitation for bridging finance — short-term loans capped at 18 months that allow homeowners to buy a new property before selling their existing one. Repayment comes from sale proceeds, not monthly income.
The change targets mortgage-free homeowners over 50 who want to downsize but cannot secure a new property first. The Deputy Governor noted that income-based limits are “less relevant” when the loan is repaid from property sale proceeds. The loan-to-value limit still applies, and all other mortgage measures remain unchanged.

Asking-price inflation is running at 5.7% year-on-year, with average house prices now at eight times the average income. Both the ESRI and the Central Bank have lowered new-home completion forecasts — targets remain below government goals. Budget 2026 allocated over €9 billion in capital funding for housing, including €2.9 billion for 10,200 social homes. VAT on completed apartments was cut from 13.5% to 9%.

The Residential Tenancies (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2026 took effect on 1 March for all new tenancies. The legislation installs a minimum tenancy duration of six years and restricts no-fault evictions — the most significant change to tenant protections since the Residential Tenancies Act 2004.
The bill is part of the Government’s broader effort to address Ireland’s rental crisis, where demand consistently outstrips supply and rents in major cities have risen well beyond wage growth. Source: University Times

The WHO and PAHO verified Chile as leprosy-free on 4 March 2026, making it the first country in the Americas and second globally to achieve this status. Chile has not recorded a locally transmitted case of leprosy (Hansen disease) for over 30 years — the last was in 1993 on Rapa Nui (Easter Island). Free multidrug therapy supplied since 1995 through WHO, funded by The Nippon Foundation and Novartis, was essential to elimination. On 2 April, President Trump signed a Proclamation modifying Section 232 measures on steel, aluminium, and copper, effective 6 April. The Yale Budget Lab estimates the tariff burden at roughly $1,500 per household per year.

H.R. 8229, introduced in the 119th Congress, would prohibit algorithmic decision systems from setting individualised prices for food, groceries, and related consumer goods. The bill is part of a broader wave: the Fair Grocery Pricing Act (H.R. 1788), the Stop Price Gouging in Grocery Stores Act (H.R. 4966), and the Algorithmic Accountability Act (H.R. 5511) all target automated pricing and FTC oversight.

We never use CNN, Fox News, the Daily Mail, tabloids, or celebrity-driven outlets as primary citations. If a story cannot be sourced to a document that existed before any journalist wrote about it, we do not run it.
Every story passes the clearing test: would this story exist without celebrities, political performance, or the outrage cycle? If the answer is no, we kill it. Stories that exist only because someone famous said something, or because social media is angry, do not belong in the clearing.
We show every correction publicly. We do not silently rewrite published stories. If we got something wrong, the correction appears on the corrections page with the original text preserved. Trust requires transparency about error.
Our consequence scoring weights coverage gap most heavily. A story that nobody else is covering about a structural change affecting millions of people will always rank above a story that every outlet is already running. We are not in the business of adding to noise.
Every claim in every story links to the primary source — the actual filing, ruling, dataset, or paper. Not another news outlet’s report about it. If we cannot link to the original, we say so explicitly and explain why.

Book of the Week: Endurance: Shackleton’s Incredible Voyage by Alfred Lansing (1959). As the Artemis II crew returns from the Moon, revisit one of the greatest survival stories ever written. Shackleton’s 1914 Antarctic expedition went wrong in every conceivable way — yet he brought every crew member home alive. The parallels with space exploration are not subtle: a small crew, hostile environment, equipment failures, and a leader whose judgment never wavered. Still the benchmark.
Recipe — Wild Garlic Colcannon: April is peak wild garlic season across Ireland’s woodlands. Boil 800g floury potatoes (Rooster or Kerr’s Pink) until tender. Steam 200g wild garlic leaves for 2 minutes, then chop roughly. Warm 100ml milk and 40g butter. Mash potatoes with the warm milk and butter. Fold in the wilted garlic and 3 chopped scallions. Season generously. Serve with a well of melted butter in the centre and a fried egg on top. The garlic is at its mildest and sweetest right now — wait until May and it turns bitter.
